The Sonic Articulation of Sunbeams

Panel System

Since the sculpture is intended to be a temporary installation, we started thinking hard about the future of the piece during the design development process. Laser cutting the panels gives us the option of getting more intricate shapes, and we brainstormed a number of different ways to assemble the piece so it could be easily disassembled, stored, shipped, and reinstalled elsewhere. Though creating a fully bolted panel system, which would pack relatively flat, was an attractive idea, we decided to go with welded ‘rings’ that could be bolted together on site, then nest within each other when being stored.
